Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the latest game in Nintendo's adorable life-simulation series, which revolves around the player character starting a new life on a deserted island, was released on Friday after nearly two years of anticipation and has already won the hearts of gamers all over the world. And at the right time, too: because of its emphasis on escapism and spending time in nature, my colleague Palmer Haasch has dubbed it "the perfect game for alleviating social distancing woes."However, if you've never played an Animal Crossing game before, it's easy to get stuck wondering what you should be doing at any given moment. The game rarely provides explicit objectives, and it is largely up to the player to devise their own timetable.

Starting the game and establishing your own island
The check-in counter is located in the lobby. As soon as you start the game, you'll be greeted by Timmy and Tommy, the Nook Twins, who will assist you in adjusting to life on a desert island. It is here that you will make the first decisions that will shape your New Horizons experience. First and foremost, they will inquire about your name and birthday. This has little impact aside from how other characters refer to you and when you receive birthday gifts from them. After that, you'll be able to customize the appearance of your character. Unlike the previous games in the series, you have complete control over your character's appearance, allowing you to choose the hairstyle, eyes, makeup, and other features that appeal to you. And if you're not sure about your design at this point, don't worry; you'll be able to change Animal Crossing Items at any point later on in the game.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you'll have to decide which island you'd like to live on. After telling the twins which hemisphere you're in (which will have an impact on the flow of the seasons throughout the year), you'll be presented with a choice of four different islands to visit. Every island is roughly the same size and has roughly the same amount of resources. While there are no wrong choices, I'd recommend looking for the section of the island that has a small white leaf symbol on it and selecting the island that has the most shoreline connected to that section. You'll be stuck in this section for the majority of the game's early stages, so you'll need plenty of nook miles tickets for sale.

Later on in the game, you'll be given the opportunity to change the landscape of your island. If you make a decision about an island, a name, an appearance, or even your birthday and immediately regret it, don't panic — simply return to your Switch's homescreen, close the game, and reopen it. You will be able to restart the check-in process from the beginning.

Putting up your tent and exploring your island
After a brief in-flight movie, you'll arrive on your new island and be escorted to the plaza. This is where you'll meet your neighbors — your island starts with two — as well as Tom Nook, the island's fearless leader. Pay attention to the flowers and sticks that have been scattered throughout the grass as you walk to the plaza. You won't be able to get your hands on them right away, but they'll be critical in the near future. Tom Nook will greet you upon your arrival on the island before instructing you to find a suitable location to pitch your tent. Tents can be purchased with bells ACNH from either Timmy or Tommy.

Your tent will serve as your base of operations for quite some time — it's where you'll start the game when you turn it on and where you'll most likely store your belongings — so choosing the right one is crucial. However, you'll quickly discover that there isn't much available space for you to work with. Your starting area is surrounded by impassable rivers, which means that at least half of your island is inaccessible. With this in mind, choose a location that is close to the island plaza — you'll be spending a lot of time there, so it's best to make your journey as short as possible.

Keep in mind that erecting your tent over a tree or rock will result in the destruction of that resource. Rocks will reappear somewhere else on the island in a few days, and trees will vanish unless you replant them later. When erecting your tent, you can visualize what it will look like before making your final decision, which is a great way to see what resources will be displaced. After you've finished setting up your tent, return to Tom Nook's house. He'll congratulate you and ask you to assist your neighbors in erecting their tents as well.

This is a wonderful opportunity to get to know your neighbors. Find each of them (they won't be too far away) and speak with them. They'll introduce themselves and offer to allow you to set up their tents. If you have strong feelings about where your neighbors should live, tell them you'll find them a place to live; otherwise, simply say, "Looks good to me."In addition, if you don't like your neighbors for whatever reason, you can simply restart the game and you'll be assigned new neighbors. However, keep in mind that doing so will send you all the way back to check-in, where you'll have to choose from yet another selection of random islands.
