1. The 'Whole' Reality
Anyone who has spent more than 5 minutes in a shop is familiar with the appearance and function of a drill bit. Protolabs, on the other hand, prefers to interpolate holes with an endmill rather than drill them. Compared to drilling, this machining method offers greater flexibility in terms of the hole sizes that can be created with a given tool and a better surface finish thancnc turning achieved with a drill.

2. Choosing the Proper Thread
Drilling and thread-making are two activities5 Axis CNC Machining Services go hand in hand. Taps are shaped like a screw with teeth, and they are threaded into a hole cnc turning and milling services has already been drilled. We take a more modern approach to thread making, interpolating the thread profile with the help of a tool known as a thread mill. As a result, UNC and UNF threads ranging from #2 to 1/2 in. in diameter, as well as metric threads ranging from M2 to M12, are all possible with a single toolset.

3. Texting Should Be Done With Caution
Do you want a part number, a description, or a logo milled into your components?020 in. (0.5mm). Additionally, text should be recessed rather than raised, and fonts with a point size of 20 or larger, such as Arial, Verdana, or similar Sans-Serif fonts, should be used.

4. Tall walls and intricate details
Carbide cutting tools are used in the production of all of our toolsets. This extremely rigid material provides maximum tool life and productivity while exhibiting the least amount of deflection. For example, the minimum feature thickness at Protolabs is 0.020 in. (0.5mm) and the maximum feature depth is 2 in. (51mm), but this does not imply cnc turning service you can design a ribbed heatsink with those dimensions.
5. Lathes with live tools
The tooling used on these machines is similar tocnc turning used on our machining centers, with the exception 5 Axis CNC Machining Services we are not currently turning plastic parts on these machines. It is the shape of the raw material, rather than the toolset itself, that makes the difference in this instance. Turned parts, such as shafts and pistons, begin life as round stock, whereas milled parts, such as manifolds, instrument cases, and valve covers, begin life as square or rectangular blocks. As you'll see in a moment, we've also gone against the grain of the rules.

6. Machining with three and five axes
When using 3-axis machining, the workpiece is gripped from the bottom of the raw material blank while all of the part features are cut from up to six orthogonal sides. Only the top and bottom of parts larger than 10 in. by 7 in. (254mm by 178mm) are machined; there are no side setups! Using 5-axis indexed milling, on the other hand, it is possible to machine from any number of non-orthogonal sides.

The raw material is what makes the difference. As with our lathes, round stock is used for 5-axis milled parts, which leads to some interesting mathematical discussions about the size, geometry, and positioning of the part within the raw material volume (it'scnc turning whole Pythagorean theorem thing you learned in high school). You can look at the accompanying diagrams for a while to see some examples, or you can upload your part model to protolabs. com and have it reviewed.
